Getting birth and death certificates in India has become much easier in 2026, thanks to the Civil Registration System (CRS) portal and new digital initiatives. The government has streamlined the process with fixed fees of ₹50 for birth certificates and ₹100 for death certificates across all states.
Honestly yaar, the old days of running around government offices are mostly gone now.

New Digital Process in 2026
The Ministry of Home Affairs launched the unified CRS portal in January 2026, making registration super simple. You can now apply online from anywhere in India, and the certificate gets delivered to your address within 7 working days.
States like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra have already processed over 2 lakh applications through this system. Mumbai alone handles around 500 birth registrations daily through the portal.
Key features include:
- QR code verification for authenticity
- Multi-language support in 22 Indian languages
- SMS updates at every step
- Digital signatures from registrar offices
Documents Required and Fees
For birth certificates, you need hospital discharge summary, parents’ Aadhaar cards, and marriage certificate. Death certificates require hospital death summary, deceased’s Aadhaar, and applicant’s ID proof.
The fee structure is now standardized:
- Birth certificate: ₹50 (first copy), ₹25 (additional copies)
- Death certificate: ₹100 (first copy), ₹50 (additional copies)
- Late registration (after 1 year): Additional ₹200 penalty
- Speed post delivery: Extra ₹50
Payment can be made through UPI, net banking, or credit cards. Delhi and Bengaluru also accept digital wallets like Paytm and PhonePe.
State-wise Variations
While the central portal exists, some states still have their own systems. Gujarat uses its own ‘Mamta’ portal for birth registration, while Uttar Pradesh operates the ‘Jan Suvidha Kendra’ network across 75 districts.
West Bengal has tie-ups with Common Service Centers (CSCs) in rural areas, charging an additional ₹20 service fee. Rajasthan allows registration through e-Mitra centers in over 300 locations statewide.
Processing times vary – metros like Delhi and Mumbai take 5-7 days, while smaller cities might need 10-15 days. Remote areas in states like Himachal Pradesh or Assam can take up to 21 days.
Important Changes from Previous Years
The biggest change in 2026 is mandatory Aadhaar linking for all new registrations. Children born after April 2026 get automatic Aadhaar enrollment through the birth registration process itself.
Late registration rules have become stricter. If you’re registering a birth after 1 year, you need an affidavit from a magistrate along with the penalty fee. Deaths must be registered within 21 days, or face legal issues for property transfers.
Mujhe lagta hai these digital changes are really helpful, especially for families in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. The old system was such a headache, bhai. Now at least everything is transparent with proper tracking and fixed timelines.
