Arre yaar, மின் தடை is becoming a real headache for Tamil cinema these days! Major productions in Chennai’s AVM Studios and Coimbatore’s Kovai Studios are facing serious delays because of frequent power cuts. Honestly, it’s affecting everything from Rajinikanth’s upcoming Jailer 2 to smaller budget films.

Chennai Studios Hit Hard by மின் தடை
The situation in Chennai is pretty bad bhai. AVM Studios reported losing almost 15 shooting days in April 2026 alone due to power cuts. Director Nelson Dilipkumar had to reschedule Jailer 2 scenes multiple times.
Even Prasad Studios in Vadapalani is struggling. They’ve invested ₹2.5 crore in backup generators this year, but matlab fuel costs are eating into their budgets like crazy.
- Vijay’s Leo 2 shooting delayed by 8 days at Binny Mills studio
- Suriya’s upcoming film with Vetrimaaran postponed twice in March 2026
- Small budget productions losing ₹50,000-₹1 lakh per day during power cuts
Impact on Television and OTT Content
It’s not just movies yaar. Sun TV’s popular serial Pandian Stores had to shift shooting from their Kilpauk studio to Hyderabad because of irregular power supply. The production house spent extra ₹15 lakh just for relocation.
Hotstar’s Tamil original series “Chennai Stories” faced similar issues. Director Gautham Menon tweeted about losing crucial night scenes due to sudden power failures in T. Nagar studio.
Netflix’s regional content team is now preferring Hyderabad over Chennai for Tamil productions. Mujhe lagta hai this trend will continue if the மின் தடை problem doesn’t get solved soon.
Government Response and Industry Solutions
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a special power supply scheme for film studios in February 2026. Under this, registered studios will get priority power connection for ₹8 per unit.
But honestly, many small studios can’t afford this premium rate. A typical day’s shooting in Kodambakkam area consumes about 500-800 units, making it super expensive.
- Lyca Productions installed solar panels worth ₹3 crore at their Poonamallee facility
- AGS Entertainment partnered with Tata Power for dedicated generator supply
- Smaller production houses are pooling resources to rent backup power systems
Long-term Effects on Tamil Entertainment Industry
The மின் தடை issue is pushing many productions to shift base. Karthik Subbaraj’s production house Stone Bench Films is now considering permanent setup in Bangalore where power situation is better.
Even dubbing studios are affected yaar. Famous dubbing artist Deepa Venkat mentioned how voice recording sessions get interrupted 3-4 times daily due to power fluctuations in Nungambakkam area.
Mujhe honestly lagta hai ki if this continues, Tamil cinema might lose its stronghold in Chennai. Already, big budget films like Indian 3 with Kamal Haasan are preferring Ramoji Film City over local studios. The industry needs urgent infrastructure support to stay competitive.
