The Modi Group Legacy and Early Life

Born into the wealthy Modi Group family in Delhi, Lalit Modi had business in his blood. His father Krishan Kumar Modi built the Modi Group empire with brands like 24Seven convenience stores and Modi Entertainment Network. The family’s net worth crossed ₹5,000 crores even before IPL happened.

Honestly yaar, Lalit always had that entrepreneur mindset. After studying at Duke University in America, he returned to India in the 1990s and started Modi Entertainment Network. This guy was already making waves in sports broadcasting before anyone knew what T20 cricket was!

IPL Revolution – The ₹11,000 Crore Gamble

2008 mein Lalit Modi ne cricket history rewrite kar diya. The first IPL season had these franchises:

  • Mumbai Indians – ₹111.9 crores
  • Chennai Super Kings – ₹91 crores
  • Royal Challengers Bangalore – ₹111.6 crores
  • Delhi Daredevils – ₹84 crores
  • Rajasthan Royals – ₹67 crores
  • Kings XI Punjab – ₹76 crores
  • Kolkata Knight Riders – ₹75.09 crores
  • Deccan Chargers – ₹107 crores

Sahi hai na? Total auction amount was ₹724 crores for just 8 teams. Today IPL’s brand value is over ₹75,000 crores – that’s Modi’s vision right there!

The Corruption Charges and London Exile

But then 2010 mein sab kuch badal gaya. BCCI suspended Lalit Modi over financial irregularities in IPL contracts. ED (Enforcement Directorate) slapped money laundering charges worth ₹1,500 crores on him. Income Tax department claimed he owed ₹400 crores in unpaid taxes.

Modi had to flee to London where he’s been living since 2010. His passport got revoked in 2018, making him technically stateless. Arre bhai, from cricket’s emperor to exile – what a fall!

Life in London and Current Status in 2026

Currently living in his ₹50 crore mansion in Mayfair, London, Lalit Modi runs his business empire remotely. He’s been fighting extradition requests from Indian government for over 15 years now. His legal team includes some of UK’s top lawyers costing him lakhs of pounds annually.

Modi’s Twitter account still has 1.2 million followers where he regularly posts about cricket and politics. In 2022, he made headlines for his relationship with actress Sushmita Sen, though they later clarified they weren’t married.

Mujhe lagta hai, whatever his legal troubles, Lalit Modi’s IPL creation changed Indian cricket forever. From a ₹11,000 crore experiment to today’s ₹75,000 crore entertainment industry – that’s some legacy yaar! But justice pending for 16 years? That’s also India’s reality unfortunately.
